Vindolanda Roman Fort, Northumberland, England.
As always don't forget to watch in the highest quality your device can handle for the best visual experience.
you can read up about the Vindolanda Tablets here :-
www.britishmuseum.org/collection/galleries/roman-britain/vindolanda-tablets
Archaeological excavations of the site show it was under Roman occupation from roughly 85 AD to 370 AD. Located near the modern village of Bardon Mill in Northumberland, it guarded the Stanegate, the Roman road from the River Tyne to the Solway Firth. It is noted for the Vindolanda tablets, a set of wooden leaf-tablets.
The earliest Roman forts at Vindolanda were built of wood and turf. The remains are now buried as much as 13 ft (4 m) deep in the anoxic waterlogged soil.
Excavations are undertaken each summer, and some of the archaeological deposits reach depths of 6 metres (20 ft). The conditions at these depths have preserved thousands of artefacts, such as 850 ink tablets and over 160 boxwood combs, that normally disintegrate in the ground, thus providing an opportunity to gain a fuller understanding of Roman life - military and otherwise - on the northern frontier. The study of these ink tablets shows a literacy among both the high born who lived there, as with the party invitation from one officer's wife to another and with soldiers and their families who send care packages with notes on the contents of the packages.
Nearly 2000-year-old Roman boxing gloves were uncovered at Vindolanda in 2017.
In addition to the older initial findings of ink tablets, shoes and combs, several more artifacts and discoveries of note have been covered by the media. In 2017, The Guardian (British Newspaper) focused on a discovery of cavalry barracks that were uncovered during the excavation season that held a large number of artifacts including swords, ink tablets, textiles, arrowheads, and other military paraphernalia. Relative dating of the barracks had determined that they were built around 105 AD. Also publicized was the discovery of a cache of 25 ink tablets found earlier in the 2017 season. The tablets were discovered in a trench in one of the earliest layers of the fort, dating to the 1st century AD. This discovery was considered to be the second-largest discovery of ink tablets in the world, with the first being a cache that was also discovered at Vindolanda in 1992.
In 2010, the BBC announced the discovery of the remains of a child between the ages of 8 and 10 years, which was uncovered in a shallow pit in a barrack room in a position suggesting that its arms may have been bound. Further archaeological analysis indicated that it could be female. She is believed to have died about 1,800 years ago.
The site itself comprises nine forts built on top of each other. Soldiers from all over the Roman Empire, including Belgium, Germany and France were stationed here. The visible stone fort dates to the third century and the impressive remains include the fort walls, the headquarters building, the Commanding Officer’s house, granaries and barracks. The remains of the extramural settlement lie just outside of the fort walls. Buildings line a main street including houses, shops, a tavern and a bathhouse.
Excavations take place on the site every year and attract hundreds of volunteers from all over the world. The site has oxygen free conditions, which preserve the artefacts amazingly.

Greetings from Canada Ray. 🍁 Vindolanda Roman Fort and museum looks like a great place to explore. How fortuitous that the waterlogged soil has kept almost 2K yrs of history perfectly preserved. Amazing that you can volunteer for archaeological digs at the site. Had no idea that was even a thing. Very cool. Thanks for including the link to the Vindolanda Tablets. I think we often tend to view people of the past as being very different from ourselves, or possibly less “civilized.” Interesting to see that they concerned themselves with many of the same day to day, minute issues as ourselves. Not so different after all. The building (mausoleum?) at the graveyard is stunning. Both the museum and the Roman site look quite big. It must have taken you a good while to get through it all. As always, I appreciate these brief “time travels” into the past, as well as a glimpse of my beautiful England. Such a treat. Hope your weather has returned to more normal temperatures. I suspect that good English blood’s not used to such hot days lol.😂 Gotta say, I almost froze to death the summer I was over there. It wasn’t so much the lower temperature, but, I couldn’t get used to my clothes and bedding always feeling damp. On the upside, the climate does provide for that lush, breathtaking, green landscape that I love so much. Thanks for another wonderful video Ray! Appreciate you. Take care and bye for now. ❤️🇨🇦🇬🇧👋🤗🌞😎

Hiya Jill 😃👋🤗 you are definitely right about the soil, it certainly doesn’t look or feel wet on top but I’m guessing it’s the consistency that holds the moisture 🤷‍♂️ I have thought a few times about volunteering but not sure my knees or hips could handle it for any length of time, I’d probably need to find a Roman hoist to get me back on my feet 🤣🤣🤣 Those tablets were such an amazing find and in fact I’m sure they will find more at some point. They certainly provide an insight into Roman day to day life. I find the whole sight very interesting, you can easily spend hours in the museum, those shelves of Roman footwear are amazing, like a mini Footlocker 🤣😂 the weather is pretty much back to “normal” now around 20-21c in this area with showers, good for all that greenery I guess 😁 🌳 🌲 I think if my clothes and bedding felt damp I’d be quite concerned too 🤣 thankfully I’ve never experienced that (yet) 🤣😂🤣 Glad you enjoyed this brief look around Vindolanda, one of the many Roman landmarks around here and certainly one of the largest. It is actually a “privately run” site, The Vindolanda Trust, which I’ve always found strange considering they are normally in the hands of either the National Trust or English Heritage. It is a charitable trust but it’s not cheap getting in 🤣 Until next time, take care and look after yourself 🤗❤️🙏🏻🇨🇦🇬🇧

Helloooo yourself Ray!! lol 😂 Greetings from Canada 🍁. I can’t imagine choosing to live the type of life that Godric chose for himself. I wouldn’t think there’d be much joy in that. But I suppose choices were limited in those days. He did settle there for 60yrs, so it must have brought him some kind of peace and contentment. He definitely picked an incredibly gorgeous spot though. This place is fantastic!! For me personally, there’s something very moving seeing these places that held such a religious significance, standing in ruins hundreds of years later, roofless and open to the heavens above. Almost as if they’re still paying homage to “the man” himself. I’ve come to recognize and love the piece of music you often use (@10:57-@14:20). My absolute favourite. And, as usual, your signature drone footage ties everything together nicely, showcasing each site. SIDE NOTE: I absolutely despise people who litter. Its totally unnecessary. I always wonder, if they have such disregard for this gift of our beautiful planet, what other areas of their life are they lacking in? Ty Ray. Thoroughly enjoyed Finchale Priory and always appreciate your effort. Hope you’re keeping well. Take care and bye for now. ❤️🇨🇦🇬🇧🤗👋😊

Hahaha hiya Jill 🤣🤗 sometimes it’s just incomprehensible how people chose to live their lives during those times but I guess it was his way of being totally dedicated to his beliefs. I love that song too, it’s called Shadow Whispers, Alex is such an amazing writer and very underrated. The Priory really is a special place to visit sadly the first time I visited there was a number of drink cans and discarded packaging strewn around the site, very disrespectful in my opinion. There seems to be less and less respect for this planet now, it won’t affect you or I but future generations will wonder why they did it. I’m glad as always that you enjoyed this visit, your comments always give me a “lift”. I hope all is well with you and the weather is now calmed down. It’s raining here but tomorrow is forecast to be 26C (I think that’s around 82f in your money 🤣🤣) See you at the next location 😃🤗❤️🇨🇦🇬🇧

The weather is becoming very unpredictable now. 22C is great, at least in that temperature it doesn’t restrict like it does at 40C 😱 Isn’t it great that we can give each other a “lift” ….. again sorry for the late reply ☺️🤗❤️💋

Greetings from Canada Ray 🍁 Norham is fascinating! 900yrs of history, England and Scotland sitting side by side, separated only by the Tweed. No doubt a frightening place to live during those times. On my trip to England we flew into Prestwick and travelled by train down the coast. I was absolutely struck by the sight of Berwick-upon-Tweed. I’ll never forget it. I took multiple pictures of ion the way there and back. I always assumed it was part of Scotland, but google tells me it’s the most northern part of England. Now it all makes sense. The description, music, camera work, drone footage…another masterful piece of art Ray. I’m truly grateful for all you put into your videos. Ty and take care of yourself til next time. ❤️🇨🇦🇬🇧✋🤗- we hit 35 today with the humidex- summer is here 😎

Hiya Jill 😃👋🤗 this castle is in an amazing spot and had lots of sieges. I definitely wouldn’t want to be crossing that river in a boat with missiles heading towards me 😂 Berwick is in Northumberland and around 2 and a half miles from the Border. I may head up there and do the town Walls walk at some point. The usual walk starts at the railway station and ends at the barracks (approximately 3 miles) unless you get lost of course 🤣 which is quite likely 🤣 I’m glad you enjoyed this one, I would normally have done more inside the inner Bailey but I wasn’t supposed to be in there due to safety issues, however, it is now reopened so if I’d gone a few days later it would have obviously been rebuilt 🤣🤣 why they close all these places due to “health & safety concerns” is beyond me. It’s been there hundreds of years, it’s not going to fall down overnight lol. One day it’s closed off , the next it’s reopened when nothing has changed…. Weird. It is in the care of English Heritage. Thank you as always for your kind comments 🤗 take care in that heat, we are having mid 20’s which is enough for me 😁🥵 Be safe 🙏🏻🤗❤️🇨🇦🇬🇧

Greetings from Canada Ray. 🍁 Wow! Amazing footage! I took lots of screenshots on this one. Love the view @ 7:18 with the estate house nestled in this gorgeous countryside. What a great place for a walk. I’m jealous lol. This place is my idea of heaven, rich in both history and beauty. Love the monkey tree. And yes, nature really is one of life’s true gifts. Thanks Ray. I really appreciate being taken on these little adventures of yours. England will always have my heart, and your videos help soothe a bit of the ache and longing I feel for her. 🥹 Hope all is well and good with you my friend. Stay safe til next time. ❤️🇨🇦🇬🇧🤗👋🌞

Hiya Jill 😃👋🤗 I’m so glad you enjoyed this, it really is a beautiful area, get saving for your visit lol. Imagine living in that big mansion pretty much in the heart of the countryside…. Get that lotto on 😂 my lotto excitement happens if I get two numbers 🤣🤣 just need the other 4 haha. This planet has some amazing places, I hope we don’t end up spoiling it all fighting over them when it’s so unnecessary😔 I wanted to get more drone footage but there was a guy cutting logs 🪵 who probably wouldn’t take too kindly to me flying near that big house lol. Those monkey puzzle trees are VERY sharp, no wonder monkeys are puzzled by them 🤣🤣 It’s always fantastic hearing from you, thank you once again for visiting which is always appreciated. Take care, be safe and look after yourself 🙏🏻🤗❤️🇬🇧🇨🇦

👋😉Hiya Ray lovely walk about and views are beautiful. Older structures always fascinate me coz i ofter what it be like to live in them. The Monkey Puzzle tree was interesting to see for I've never see one of those before. Btw i love trees. Luckily your rains held off too. Ty for the insightful video 🥰😊 Unfortunately were experiencing a heat wave right now will be in the upper 90s too hot but when you mix in the humidity then its too much for me 🥵😉. Hopefully your doing well. 😊🤗❤️🐈‍⬛

Hellooooo 😃👋 yeah it’s a beautiful location, I think most of these buildings would have possibly been fairly cold and damp but they all had big fires lol. Many of course are still lived in but obviously have been updated a lot. Those trees have very stiff spikey leaves and believe me they are very sharp. There are a few at Belsay Hall near the castle. Weather is warming here a little but still intermittent showers. 90’s is too hot to do anything other than hide 🤣 so be careful in that heat. Doing ok here thanks, hopefully once the weather improves I’ll get further afield 😁🤗❤️🐈‍⬛

Greetings from Canada Ray. Very sobering thinking about the 100’s of thousands of men and women who passed through or passed away at this site. All gone now. Not only were they faced with the horrors of war, but many were also faced with a global pandemic of epic proportions. It’s places such as this that serve as a stark reminder to those of us who have never had to face war, and the sacrifices of those who came before us. Such a beautiful landscape holding painful memories for so many. We must never forget. Most definitely a place that would move your soul. You captured the essence of the place well with your drone footage and numbering of the site. Well done Ray. Ty as always. Take care til next time my friend. 🇨🇦🇬🇧❤️🤗👋be well.

      @Raybo1uk 2 місяці тому

Hi Jill 😃👋🤗 yes definitely very sobering to think of all the lives lost in all wars. I guess it is places like this that remind us of all the sacrifices made to protect the future for everyone. It is also the 80th anniversary today to commemorate the D-Day landings in Normandy when everyone regained their freedom through the sacrifice of others. Makes you wonder where the World would be now without all those brave souls. It is a beautiful area around there and eerily peaceful too. The landscape is covered quite a bit now but you can still see the lines from the air of many of the building placements which provides a better idea of the area covered. A bit different to my normal stuff but I did want to film this perhaps before it gets totally lost in years to come. Thank you as always for your wonderful comments which are always greatly appreciated. Until the next location…. 😁 Take care and keep safe 🤗❤️🇨🇦🇬🇧👋

Greetings from Canada Ray. 🍁 As seen by your previous videos, Cragwood is beautiful in any season. Loved the fall colours (my favourite season), but it’s nice to see how lush it is with springtime. I often see people in the comment section on UA-cam saying they hate the world, they’re so stressed out, etc. People need to put their phones down, walk outside , breathe the air, feel the wind and the sun. Nature is such a gift and is healing in so many ways. One of the best things in life imo, and it’s free. Ty for the walk. I hope you get a chance to put your camera down now and again so that you can enjoy these places that you’re filming. Hope all is good on your end. Take care til next time. 🇨🇦🇬🇧❤️🤗🌞👋

I think the problem is that that little cub cannot move his hind legs, he is not able to run and jump like he should be able to do at his age. He looks hurt in that back. The lioness (mother) and the other lions in the pride realize his problem. If you look halfway through the video, the young lions don't attack him, but rather they touch him on the back to encourage him to move, to walk, to run, but he cannot. I think that is the serious problem of that cub, because if he is not able to walk and run he has no chance of surviving, and the other lions know it: they are trying to help him (they do not harm him), but he can hardly get up or stay standing. In this video that cub hardly walks at all, and every time he tries to get up and walk his hind legs fail him. Everyone else notices and tries to encourage him to get up and walk, but he can't. That's why the lioness looks at the camera sadly, because she is aware of that cub's problem. He won't be able to survive without walking, running and jumping. They will have to abandon him to his fate.

Thanks for the video, I have been there many times and the excavations are still ongoing. There is a Time Team video on UA-cam about the site and the much greater expanse of the site that is well worth watching. Not too far from there is the oldest Anglo-Saxon church still standing in England and you can see that many of the stones used to build the church were taken from the Roman fort. There are Roman inscriptions visible on the stone walls of the church. County Durham is a great place to explore and there are not many tourists who bother to go that far north. I was born only a few miles from Binchester. Cheers from New Zealand.

Greetings from Canada Ray. 🍁What an incredible place. I’m so disappointed I missed seeing it while I was there. Right there, and staying in County Durham no less. No google etc in ‘88 lol. I do know for a fact that I saw more of England on my 1 month stay there than any of my relatives did in their entire lives of living there. So glad that I split my time up between visiting relatives and touring. The fort itself covers such a large area, but I was surprised at the size of the building complex that housed the exercise hall and baths. Roman ingenuity at its best. Like them or not, you can’t deny their contributions in architecture and engineering, among other things. I mean heated flooring, come on. lol. That alone would have been a treat. Great to see the outside baths and to have a look at the hand carved stone. Were you able to see the actual adult and child footprints? 👣 It’s the little things like this that I find the most moving. Brings everything into focus. Ty Ray. I really enjoyed this one. Beautiful drone footage at the end. Take care and bye for now. Hoping for sunshine for you and Alf. Here too. It’s been nothing but rain. 🇨🇦🇬🇧👋🤗🌞😎🐈‍⬛

Hiya Jill 😀👋🤗 it’s a shame you didn’t get to visit this place during your visit, it’s a fascinating place. The guy on reception gave me a 15 minute talk before I started my walk which gave me a good insight which I found helpful. I think it’s great that they built around it to show exactly how it would have been used. That underfloor heating and ducted air was very clever. I did see the footprints but didn’t film them as I didn’t think they would come out well in the light but totally amazing. When I asked about them I was told they were probably running due to the deeper indentations of the toes and heel, probably getting chased by the guy who just laid the concrete 🤣🤣 I will revisit in future to see what has been updated and uncovered, I will definitely film them then. Thank you as always for taking time to watch and comment 🤗 Wishing you a great week ahead. Be safe and take care 🙏🏻🤗🤗❤️🇨🇦🇬🇧

Morning Ray this was great, so interesting to see and read about and you always capture these places so well. That place seemed so big and your said most is stull underground too. You also said it was the largest in County Durham and in the whole of Northern Britain . So good that they are still excavating here, seeing those bathhouses and the underfloor heating systems must be fascinating. You showed so much on this video Ray, sooo interesting 👏👍~ Anna

Hi Anna 😃👋 thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed this video. It is a fascinating place, those Romans were certainly clever people. Most of the site is under a farmers property but as you saw from the ground survey it is an absolutely huge site, it must have been so busy in its day. I’ll no doubt be going back once more has been uncovered to see what they find 😃 Thank you for popping in it’s always appreciated and nice to see you here, I hope you and Alf are both keeping well 🙏🏻🤗👍🏻

Greetings from Canada Ray. 🍁So glad you decided to film part of your trip up there. Hermitage is an impressive piece of history. The Archbishop of Glasgow’s sermon (curse) pretty much sets the tone of the hate felt between the English and the Scots. No mistaking those words. I can’t imagine being imprisoned in such a place knowing death will not be swift or merciful. Brutal times to be living in. Loved how you ended the video with the blue of the sky reflected in the brook and drone footage of Hermitage and the beautiful landscape that surrounds her. Ty as always Ray. Hiya Jill 😃🤗 thank you. It is a beautiful drive up there I didn’t think anyone would want the full journey AND a castle video 🤣 most don’t get fully watched even when 3 minutes 🤣🤣 Yea there was a lot of hatred in those days hopefully it won’t happen again. It doesn’t even bear thinking about being stuck in that tiny hole starving to death, -- barbaric! I had to sneak the drone up as they don’t allow them over the grounds, no idea why especially when there’s nobody about but such is life nowadays, rules, rules and more rules 🤣🫢 at least I got a little footage then put car into sport mode 🤣🤣🤣 a clean getaway hahaha 🤣 I hope your week is going well, we have heavy rain with localised flooding forecast the next few days so I better order that boat, not sure I can row 🚣 with webbed feet 😂😂 until next time.
